Poker Bankrolls

Simply put, a poker bankroll means the total amount of money which a poker player intends to spend during the tenure of his or her poker career. It is sometimes also used to refer to a poker player who has managed to accumulate a lot of chips or money during the game. Building a bankroll is often viewed as a very sensible and responsible approach to playing poker and there are several means by which an average person can build a substantial bankroll even if he does not have a large mound of capital to start with. Bankroll management is as much an acquired skill which requires practice and dedication as much as it is an intuitive one.

Poker Bankroll Management

While building a poker bankroll it is important to analyze what sort of player one is. An amateur player with a day job that supplies enough to maintain lifestyle will have a personal limit which is different from that of a professional poker player. While the former might set for themselves a session bankroll, it is the latter who are more concerned with building a true poker bankroll. Bankroll management is important because it focuses on allowing players to not overreach themselves during a heated game of poker. Good bankroll management skills will ensure that the poker player emerges a winner in the long haul and does not bother itself with wins or losses in specific sessions. With skilled bankroll management players do not need to take on high risks to make money-a substantial bankroll can be built from an amount as little as $1 provided the player has the patience, time and commitment for it.

Bankrolls are usually dependant on what kind of poker is being mainly played. Most experts suggest that players must set themselves a limit of 300 big bets for a Limit Hold’ em game at 2/4 limit and 20 bets for a $50 No Limit Hold ‘em game at 0.25/0.5 blinds if they have a bankroll of $1200. They will need to increase their bankroll if they wish to play bigger bets, keeping this ratio in mind. For instance if they wish to play 30 bets in a $100 No Limit Hold ‘Em game they must have built a bankroll of at least $3000. This ratio of stakes is important to iron out any major losing streaks and winning streaks and help average out winnings. When players are faced with losing streaks they must correctly assess their available bankroll and corresponding limits before proceeding to place further bets. Conversely, when players are enjoying winning streaks they can comfortably raise their limits and play larger blinds. These strategies will guard them against going broke and preserve their net worth even during difficult times. Proper bankroll management thus, is the way to effectively tackle the short term gains and losses which are common place in a game of poker.

Some experts believe that single table tournaments are a great way to build up a bankroll without hedging too much at a go, costing a maximum of $5-$10 for one hour’s play. Even with single table tournaments players need to concentrate on playing within their self prescribed limits.

Poker players who depend on the game for sustenance will want to withdraw from their bankroll. Players could do well to withdraw 50% of their earnings once they double their initial bankroll. This way they also seed their bankroll while providing for their lifestyle.
